Know Your Tone!

Everyone has that favourite item of clothing that they know is going to make them look and feel great as soon as they put it on. Its not just the perfect cut and the up to date style, it’s the colour which compliments and lifts our natural colouring. So imagine knowing exactly what colours could make you look and feel like this all the time. It’s simple for celebrities who have personal stylists whose job it is to know this, but how do us average girls achieve this. It’s easy, just follow this simple guide and you’ll be looking and feeling as beautiful as your favourite star in no time at all.

First things first, it’s important to identify what skin tone you have. All skin tones can be split into four different groups, winter, summer, autumn and spring.

Winter- Winter is a cool skin tone with blue and pink undertones, skin colour can be porcelain, pale, yellowish olive and dark. White blondes are often winter as are Asians and Africans. Winters look best in white, black, greys, most reds, bright pink, royal purple and emerald. Winters should avoid beige, orange, gold and brown. In this picture a classic winter, Rosario Dawson, shows how to do it.

Summer- Summer’s are similar to winters with their blue and pink undertones; however summer’s colours are a little deeper. Summer skin tones are normally found in natural blondes and pale brunettes. Summer’s also normally have pale eyes. If you have summer skin look for pastels such as dusty pink, lavender and pale yellow. Most blues will also suit summer skin. However you should avoid black and orange. Here summer skinned Gwyneth Paltrow looks elegant in a dusty pink gown.
Autumn- Autumn skin tones are very warm with undertones of pale peach, golden beige or golden brown. Most red heads and brunettes with golden brown eyes are autumn. However golden blondes and black hair colouring can be too. The best look for autumn skin tones are rich earthy tones such as beige, caramel, burnt orange, dark reds, olive ivory and browns. Autumns should avoid cool shades such as pink. You can see in this picture how the shades bring out Natalie Portman’s colourings.

Spring- Last but by no means least is spring. Spring skin tones are very light, ivory tones. They normally have auburn or strawberry hair and can also be natural golden blondes. Springs generally have freckles and rosy cheeks and light blue or green eyes. Good colours for spring tones include peach, light pink, coral, yellow, spring greens, bright blues and golden browns. Springs should stay away from black, white and most shades of orange. Lindsay Lohan has obvious spring tones and this picture shows her in a classic shade for spring.
