Tips for Lips!

I sometimes had trouble finding the right colour for my lips. But I’ve found it easier now that I found a few basic guidelines that help come to an answer.

Elke Van Freudenberg, is a top celebrity and editorial makeup artist and hair stylist. Her suggestion is to start off by finding out what your undertone colour is. You do that by testing the lipstick on a piece of white paper.

She gave an example, if you have a brown toned lipstick, then the basic undertones you might see are red/pink, yellow/orange, green/blue, silver/grey/ or green.

Her rule of thumb is: “Whatever skin colour you have that you don’t like (like blue or grey under eye circles, redness, pink etc…), try NOT to copy in your lipstick colour or undertone as well. It’s like wearing a red dress with sunburn.”

Generally though, if you have a darker skin tone, colours like plums, wines or deep red would be best.

For a lighter skin tone, use light-brown beiges with pink or orange undertones.

Olive skin should use colours such as brownish reds, light browns and raisin shades of lipstick.

During the day it is recommended to use lighter colours and at night, darker colours. Feel free to add gloss no matter what time of day. Gives your lips a nice shine.

However, if you are still unsure, you can always go to a makeup artist at any department store and ask for their advice.
